Jerry H. Gurwitz, MD
Dr. Gurwitz serves as Executive Director of the Meyers Primary Care Institute of Worcester, Massachusetts (a member of the HMO Research Network), which is a joint endeavor of Fallon Community Health Plan, Reliant Medical Group, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Gurwitz serves on the Governing Board and Executive Committee of the HMO Research Network. He also serves as co-director of the NHLBI-funded HMORN Cardiovascular Research Network.
Dr. Gurwitz holds the Dr. John Meyers Professorship in Primary Care Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he also serves as Chief of the Division of Geriatric Medicine.
Dr. Gurwitz’s research falls at the intersection of geriatric medicine, cardiovascular disease, pharmacoepidemiology, and patient safety. His career has covered a spectrum from aging pharmacology, to medication effectiveness and safety, to testing innovative health information technology-based interventions to improve the quality and safety of health care. He has published over 200 original articles, and numerous reviews, commentaries, and book chapters. Dr. Gurwitz served on the IOM Committee on Preventing Medication Errors, which published its influential report in 2006.
Dr. Gurwitz has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Leon I. Goldberg Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT), the William B. Abrams Award in Geriatric Clinical Pharmacology from ASCPT, the George F. Archambault Award from the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (the Society’s highest honor), and the John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award for Research from the National Safety Foundation and the Joint Commission, a national award recognizing individual achievement in patient safety research. Dr. Gurwitz has also been the recipient of a John A. Hartford Foundation Senior Geriatrics Scholar Award.
