David H. Smith RPh, MHA, PhD

David H. Smith RPh, MHA, PhDPrincipal investigator for the KPNW site of the HMO CERTS (Centers for Research & Education on Therapeutics), an AHRQ-funded collaboration of HMOs focusing on pharmacy issues

Dr. Smith's research focuses on the economic evaluation of medical interventions and pharmacoepidemiology. Dr. Smith is involved in studies analyzing prescribing behavior, medication adherence, drug use and outcomes, and FDA-funded studies on drug safety.

Dr. Smith is conducting other pharmacy related research involving patient safety, including methods to reduce errors through alerting systems in automated physician prescribing. He is currently leading several studies on the natural history of chronic kidney disease and heart failure. He is also leading a CDC funded effort to improve the quality of laboratory based care in chronic kidney disease.

Dr. Smith received his pharmacy degree from the University of Washington in 1990. After completing his residency in General/Clinical Pharmacy he worked as a clinical pharmacist in home care. He received an MHA in Health Services Administration in 1995, and was awarded a PhD in Pharmacy Outcomes Research from the University of Washington in 1998. He is an Honorary Visiting Fellow at the University of York, Centre for Health Economics, and is adjunct faculty at the University of Washington's School of Pharmacy and the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy.
