Katherine M. Newton, PhD
Associate Director for External Research, and Senior Investigator, Group Health Center for Health Studies, and Affiliate Associate Professor of Epidemiology, University of Washington
Dr. Newton's primary interests are chronic disease epidemiology and prevention, and mid-life women's health. She has completed NIH-funded observational cohort studies on the associations between hormone therapy and cardiovascular outcomes in women with diabetes, and in women with prior cardiovascular events. Dr. Newton has a strong interest in the combined effects of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in women, and she was instrumental in establishing the HMORN Diabetes Interest Group. Dr. Newton has served two terms as a reviewer on the American Heart Association Behavioral Science, Epidemiology & Prevention 2 Study Group. Dr. Newton was the principal investigator for an NIA-funded 4-year randomized clinical trial on alternative therapies for menopause symptoms, and she has extensive experience in studies related to menopause and hormone therapy. She is also site PI for the NIDDK-funded SUPREME-DM study. She has been a principal or co-investigator on numerous randomized controlled trials, and she is a recognized resource for using Group Health's automated databases for research purposes.
